Poor sleep quality may worsen the link between PTSD and chronic pain in youth, finds study

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition an individual undergoes after experiencing a dangerous or risky situation. A new research has revealed that PTSD and chronic pain in youth are linked with poor sleep quality. According to the study published by the American Pain Society in the “Journal of Pain” in January 2018, poor sleep degrades the association between the symptoms of PTSD and chronic pain.

Study participants chosen from tertiary care children’s hospitals

Conducted by a multicenter team of Canadian and American researchers, the research entailed hypothetically believing that poor sleep quality would facilitate the link between higher PTSD, increased pain intensity, and its interference in the daily activities of young individuals, aged 10–17 years.

For their study, the researchers chose close to 100 children and adolescents from the specialty chronic pain clinics who met the requirements related to Post Traumatic Stress Symptom (PTSS), intensity of pain and interference, symptoms of anxiety, sleep quality along with a number of demographic characteristics.

The selected participants were made to fill a questionnaire that included questions related to their pain intensity and location, pain interference, anxiety symptoms and PTSD. All these were to be measured by reporting traumatic or distressing events of their lives. Another questionnaire of 10-items was further used to measure their sleep quality.

Study findings

On the basis of the research, it was concluded that:

  • The relationship of PTSD with chronic pain and with pain interference, was resolved to a certain degree with quality sleep.
  • Poor sleep quality was somewhat responsible for this relationship, as insufficiency of proper sleep was an important factor behind the co-existence of PTSD and pain.
  • Researchers concluded that since sleep was adaptable, its patterns could be modified according to clinical intervention, to prevent pain, and other factors affecting mental health, from progressing further into adulthood.
